South Holderness 387-4, Blubberhouses 69 – South Holderness won by 318 runs

Scorecard

Jack Harrison scored a daddy hundred as South Holderness crushed Blubberhouses by 318 runs in the preliminary round of the Voneus Village Cup.

The visitors, who lost the toss and were sent in to bat, were on top from the off, with captain Luke Ingram and Tom Reeves sharing a 182-run opening stand off 26.3 overs.

Ingram was dismissed for 90 (76 balls) by Will Haines (caught Lee Platts) and was joined in the changing rooms by Reeves 17 balls later, the opener caught by Sudais Shah off Rob Lowe for 87 (89).

However, by this point, Harrison had his eye in – scoring 26 runs off 11 balls – and soon brought the fireworks, blasting 162 runs off just 53 balls, including nine fours and a huge 19 sixes, to carry his side from 215 for 2 in the 30th over to 360 for 2 at the start of the 39th.

Such was his dominance, his third-wicket partner Adam Dewson scored just four runs from 14 balls as part of the 145-run stand while Luke Davis, Adil Shazad – who had only conceded 29 runs from his previous seven overs before being smashed for 23 by Harrison, Ubaid Khan, and Shah all suffered at his hand. The latter eventually got revenge in the penultimate over, dismissing him caught and bowled.

Sadly, it brought little respite for Blubberhouses’ bowlers, with a further 27 runs scored off the final 10 balls, Dewson hitting collecting a four and a six before being dismissed by Davis and Richard Rosindale contributing 14 runs off 6 balls.

South Holderness closed on 387 for 4 but credit has to be given to both Lowe and Platts with the ball, who posted figures of 1 for 45 and 0 for 33 from their respective eight overs.

In reply, Blubberhouses lost Haines and Lowe in the space of two balls in the second over to slip to 1 for 2 and set the tone for a painful innings with the bat.

Leighton Gauci – Mark Johnson’s third victim – and Barrie Fewster (bowled Kristian Rumble) soon followed, and after a second wicket for Rumble, Bevan Hill entered the attack and ripped through the lower order to reduce Blubberhouses to 45 for 9 in the 17th over.

Khan and Shah offered brave resistance, eating up 28 balls and adding 24 runs to their side’s total, before Hill bowled Khan to bring the match to a close.

Khan top-scored for his side, scoring 19 runs from 28 balls, while Platts contributed 18 runs from 20 balls. Hill (4 for 20) and Johnson (4 for 25) picked up four wickets apiece while Rumble took 2 for 9 from five overs.

South Holderness will face Great Habton, who reached the North Yorkshire (North) regional final in 2021, in the round one.
