South Wingfield 178-8, Dumbleton 127-6 – South Wingfield won by seven runs (DLS)
Dumbleton’s bid to become just the sixth side to lift back-to-back Voneus Village Cup titles ended in round five as they lost to South Wingfield by seven runs in a rain-affected clash at Dairy Lane.
After losing the toss and being put in to bat, South Wingfield were on course for a disappointing day, slipping to 72 for 7. Myles Holland accounted for three of the top four en route to figures of 3 for 28 while Will Sharp, Daniel Hammond and Adam Stuart also among the wickets.
However, tailender Zack Whittingham proved impossible to shift. Batting at No.9, he scored 54 not out off 55 balls, sharing a crucial 63-run eighth-wicket stand with Harry Brown (31 off 66) in the process, to help his side recover to post a competitive total.
The morning after and time to take stock of the fantastic journey this @TheCricketerNVC has meant to so many. An unbeaten run, of 11 games, going back to May 2022 comes to an end – 25 different players traveled nearly 1000 miles, a Final at Lords along the way. #NVC23👏🏆🏏🟡⚫️ pic.twitter.com/ssYgWa98UX

Chasing 179, Dumbleton had their own struggles with the bat, collapsing to 56 for 6. Stuart and captain Rupert Salmon were the only members of the top five to reach double figures while Dan Connolly (2 for 16) and Brown (2 for 28) picked up two wickets apiece.
Scott Tremain (36 not out) and Hammond (36 not out) rebuilt Dumbleton’s innings, putting on 71 runs for the seventh wicket, but when the rain set in in the 31st over, they were agonisingly short of the DLS target of 135.
South Wingfield will be on the road once again in round six, travelling to Milford Hall on July 2.
Milford Hall, representing West Midlands, cruised to a 162-run victory over Llandysul thanks to a blistering century from Harry Edwards and a standout bowling performance from Rob Firth (3 for 21).
